Log a big purchase
A $40 tarp is an expense. A $9,000 zero-turn mower is a big purchase: you’ll use it for years, and the tax rules treat it differently. Thalermark keeps that difference out of your way. Answer three plain questions and it handles the rest.
Log it
Section titled “Log it”From the top of the new-expense form (“Will you use this for years?” → Big purchase), or the Big purchases link at the top of the Expenses list.
-
What did you buy? How much, and when.
-
Did you pay all at once, or over time?
- Paid it all at once: done.
- Paying it off over time: enter any down payment, and Thalermark tracks what you still owe.
-
How do you want to handle it on taxes?
- Deduct it all this year: write off the whole cost now.
- Spread it out over the years you’ll use it: a little each year.
Not sure which? That’s a fine question for whoever does your taxes. You can see what each choice looks like on the tax worksheet.
Paying it off
Section titled “Paying it off”A financed purchase shows “You still owe” right on its page, with a Record a payment form: amount, how much of it was interest, date. When the balance hits zero, the page says so: paid off, nothing more owed on this.
The list
Section titled “The list”Things you bought shows everything durable in one place: what you paid, what you still owe, and how each one is being handled on taxes. Deducted in full, or spread out with the running count of what’s been counted so far.
